Turkey Hunts
Turkey hunts are three day minimums. Turkey applications for Spring 2021 will be accepted January 1, 2021 thru January 31, 2021.
New for the 2007 season was the harvest reporting. Every bird has to be reported within 24 hours of harvesting the bird. It can either be reported over the telephone or the internet. New for 2008 was that non-resident hunters may hunt during Spring Turkey Season 2.
A nonreturnable fee of $5.00 will be added to all telephone orders. Call 1-800-367-1188 seven days a week. Visit the Iowa DNR website for application dates and forms. License fees are $119.00 . A non-resident hunting license is also required which is an additional fee of $131.00 plus habitat stamp for $15.00. A one-bird limit insures large numbers of birds and the popularity of this sport among our residents has not taken off. These birds sport long beards, good spurs, and body weights are commonly harvested from 24 to 28 lbs.
In 2010 one of our clients harvested a thirty-two and a half pound bird to put him at number ten on the list of the National Wild Turkey Federation for heaviest Eastern typical taken with a modern firearm.
We had another record bird taken a year ago. It is ranked number fourteenth in the state. It had four beards, 9 8/16, 9, 10, 7 4/16, totaling 35 12/16 inches. Spurs 1 4/16 and weighed 22 pounds 3 ounces. It was one happy fourteen year old boy that took this bird. He is anxiously awaiting his mount.
